Luigi Ademollo, Horatius Cocles fighting at the Pons Sublicius

lente

LUIGI ADEMOLLO (Milan 1764 - Florence 1849) HORATIUS COCLES FIGHTING THE ETRUSCANS AT THE PONS SUBLICIUS
Black chalk on blue laid paper, 275 x 408 mm, incised for transfer. Titled in pen 'Orazio al Ponte', possibly by Luigi Ademollo. Dedicated in pen by Luigi Ademollo's nephew Carlo Ademollo (1824-1911) 'Carlo Ademollo dona all'Egregio Sig Prof Paganucci'.

Ademollo was pupil of Domenico Aspari and Giuliano Traballesi at the Brera Academy, in Milan. In 1785 he went to Rome to study the works of classical antiquity. There he met other artists who, like himself, belonged to the association founded by Felice Giani, the 'Accademia dei Pensieri'. In 1788, Ademollo settled in Florence, where he was admitted to the prestigious 'Accademia di Belle Arti' and where he was to live and work until his death. Ademollo was an erudite master whose artistic imagination was based on a profound knowledge of classical literature. He was very active in Tuscany, as is documented by numerous monumental fresco paintings with historical and allegorical themes as well as by decoration cycles for churches, palaces and public buildings in Florence, Siena and Arezzo. Ademollo also distinguished himself as an etcher and illustrator.
