Woodcut, ca. 1890-1900. Sealed 'Bairei'. Very good impression and colour; lightly toned, otherwise in good condition. 212 x 258 mm.

Born in Kyoto, Bairei, a painter, book illustrator and art teacher, was a pupil of Nakajima Raisho, of the Maruyama school. After Raisho's death, Bairei studied with the Shijo school master Shiokawa Bunrin. Bairei specialized in flower and bird prints and landscapes, with a touch of western realism.
