| CESARE BARTOLENA (Livorno 1830 - 1903) A SEASIDE VIEW Black chalk, 87 x 145 mm. Signed 'CBartolena'. A pupil of Enrico Pollastrini at the Florentine Accademia, Cesare Bartolena met the Macchiaioli at the Caffè Michelangelo; he never joined their movement but surely the Macchiaioli helped him to abandon the conventional academic language. He was a friend of Giovanni Fattori, who influenced very much Bartolena's style in drawings and bozzetti. Bartolena participated in the first and second Italian Independence Wars, thereafter military paintings became one of his specialties. |
