BALDASSARRE CALAMAI (Florence 1797 - 1851) AN EPISODE OF THE PLAGUE IN FLORENCE IN 1348
Pen and brown ink. Signed 'Baldassarre / Calamaj inv°'; 202 x 270 mm. The drawing is connected with one of the most celebrated paintings by the artist, the first version of whom was exhibited in 1828. A second version of the painting (1836) is in the Florentine Galleria dell'Accademia (inv. Accademia, n. 395 ).

A pupil of Benvenuti at the Florentine Academy, Calamai had some success in the twenties and thirties as a painter of historical romantic subjects, as 'Milton visiting Galileo' (1827) and 'An episode of the plague in Florence' (1828 and 1836). Calamai was also a highly respected draughtsman. Since 1836 his activity slowed, perhaps because his disorderly life, which is mentioned by his contemporaries.
