A pupil of Benvenuti at the Florentine Academy, Calamai had some success in the twenties and thirties as a painter of historical romantic subjects, as 'Milton visiting Galileo' (1827) and 'An episode of the plague in Florence' (1828 and 1836). Calamai was also a highly respected draughtsman. Since 1836 his activity slowed, perhaps because his disorderly life, which is mentioned by his contemporaries. |
