| GIOVANNI ANTONIO CANAL, IL CANALETTO (Venice 1697 - 1768) THE TOWER OF MALGHERA Etching. Bromberg 2, Succi 13. Final state. A good impression, with full margins; lightly foxed, otherwise in very good condition. Watermark: letter 'R'. To the platemark 302 x 432 mm, the entire sheet measuring 377 x 508 mm. Canaletto was the most famous view painter of the 18th century. Apart from ten years spent in England he lived in Venice. Trained by his father, a theatrical scenery designer, and influenced by Giovanni Paolo Panini, Canaletto became a successful painter of picturesque views; most of his clients were foreigners, above all Englishmen. He was also an accomplished draughtsman and etcher. Canaletto brought to etching the values of a painter and achieved in this medium new means of representing form in light. The images of his prints seem to lie beneath a shimmering atmosphere originated by the interplay between trembling parallel lines and the areas of white paper; forms tend to flow into each other, creating the illusion of the movement of air in the heat of the summer sun. |
