BARTOLOMEO CORIOLANO (Bologna c. 1599 - 1676) IESUS MARIA (The Virgin with Christ Child)
Chiaroscuro woodcut from two blocks; after Guido Reni's painting in Bologna, church of San Bartolomeo; Bartsch 5. Third state of three. A very good impression. Minor faults, generally in very good condition; 201 x 154 mm.
Born in Bologna, in family of engravers of German origin, Bartolomeo Coriolano executed several chiaroscuro woodcuts after Guido Reni's paintings. Chiaroscuro is a type of woodcut in which tonal effects are created by printing successively on to the same sheet from different blocks of varying tone. Two or more tones of a single colour are used, or of two closely related colours, one of which is darker than the other. |
