Pen and brown ink, over a sketch in red and black chalks. With the monogram 'PD' in pen. Inscribed in black chalk by a later hand 'The Holy Family / Study by Pietro D.' On the verso a sketch of the same subject in red chalk; 260 x 195 mm. PROVENANCE: Galleria Apolloni, Rome; private collection, Milan.

Pier Dandini was born to a family of artists. He was the son and pupil of the painter Vincenzo Dandini and his uncle Cesare was a prominent painter in Florence. In addition to having training within the family, Pietro traveled to Bologna, Modena, Venice and Rome. He was patronized by members of the Medici family and completed a number of ecclesiastical commissions in Florence and Tuscany; he also worked for the Florentine nobility.
