Marcello Guasti, standing cat

MARCELLO GUASTI (Florence 1924) STANDING CAT
Bronze, c. 1956-58. 43,5 by 16 by 27,5 cm.
Marcello Guasti studied xylography under Pietro Parigi and made his artistic debut as a printmaker and a painter in the fifties. In 1956 he executed his first sculptures, a series of cats in bronze. From 1957 to 1959 Guasti created a group of wooden and bronze statues of the 'Renaioli' (sand-diggers) of the Arno river, an important event for the Italian sculpture in those years. In the sixties he left figurativism moving to informal expressionism and, at the end of the decade, to a abstract, geometric language. Marcello Guasti also created memorials and monuments.
