UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797 - 1858) PRINCESS USUYUKI
Woodcut, from the series 'One Hundred Poems by One Poet Each, likened to the Ogura Version', published by Ibaya Sensaburo, 1843-46. Signed 'Hiroshige ga', red artist's seal. Very good impression and colour, full margins, minor flaws, generally in very good condition. Oban, 370 x 146 mm.
Each of the prints from this series suggests a subject inspired by the popular Japanese poetical anthology 'Ogura Hyakunin Isshu', a collection of 100 poems by 100 different poets. In this print Hiroshige, links an episode of the story of princess Usuyuki (a main character in the kabuki play 'Shin Usuyuki Monogatari') with the poem by Sone no Yoshitada (sec. X/XI): "Like a mariner sailing over Yura's strait with his rudder gone, I do not know where the end lies over the deep of love."
A preparatory drawing by Hiroshige for this print is at the British Museum, London.
