Albert Marquet was very young when he went to Paris and began studying at the the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs. There he met Matisse, who influenced his art. After transferred to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he was taught by Gustave Moreau. His Fauvist works with their bright primary colors were created in 1905-07, and then he switched to a more somber palette based on silvery gray tones. Marquet painted portraits and female nudes, but most of his output consisted of landscapes. He often painted scenes of Paris ports and bridges.
A talented draughtsman, he worked in simple, rapid lines.
