GEROLAMO MIROLA (Bologna 1535/1540 – Parma 1570) SEATED FEMALE FIGURE (recto); SKETCHES OF TWO MALE HEADS AND OF A LEG (verso) Pen and brown ink, brown wash; a faint sketch in red chalk on top left corner (recto). Inscribed 'Parmesan'. 256 x 171 mm. A few losses.
The penwork of this fine Parmigianinesque drawing is reminiscent of several drawings published by Diane De Grazia in her researches on the artists working at the Ottavio Farnese's ducal court in Parma. Bertoja and Mirola were the most important artists working for that court. See Diane De Grazia, 'Bertoja, Mirola and the Farnese Court', Bologna, 1991. In 2008 Alessandra Bigi Iotti and Giulio Zavatta convincingly published the recto and the verso of this drawing as an original work by Gerolamo Mirola. See Alessandra Bigi Iotti and Giulio Zavatta 'Un disegno di Gerolamo Mirola e alcune considerazioni sulla Sala del Bacio nel Palazzo del Giardino di Parma', in 'Parma per l'Arte', Nuova Serie, anno XV, fascicolo 2 - 2008, 1/2 - 2009 pages 93-102, figures 1 and 5.
