JUSEPE DE RIBERA called LO SPAGNOLETTO (Jativa 1591 - Naples 1652) THE LAMENTATION
Etching and drypoint, Bartsch 1, Brown 17. A fine impression of the second, final state, printing with wiping marks and light tone; small margins, minimal faults, generally in very good condition. 156 x 255 mm.
Accepted as a work of Ribera since the time of Basan, the print has been doubted in 1970 by Neil Maclaren. Jonathan Brown shared Maclaren's opinion in 1973, but reattributed it to Ribera in 1982; see J. Brown, 'The Prints and Drawings of Ribera' in 'Jusepe de Ribera lo Spagnoletto', catalogue of the exhibition, Kimbell Art Museum, Forth Worth, 1982.
