| SEBASTIANO RICCI (Belluno 1659 - Venice 1734) TWO STUDIES OF THE STANDING VIRGIN HOLDING THE CHRIST CHILD Pen and brown ink, underdrawing in black chalk; on verso, studies by another hand. 225 x 316 mm. Sebastiano Ricci came from a noted family of artists. After formal artistic training in Venice, he travelled widely, working in Bologna, Rome, Florence, Vienna, London, and Paris. His dramatic, sumptuous paintings recalled the art of Paolo Veronese and appealed to royal and ecclesiastical patrons across Europe. Late in his career, Sebastiano often collaborated with his nephew Marco Ricci. Sebastiano Ricci was one of the most successful draughtsmen of his time and his drawings marked the transition from late Baroque to Rococo in Venice. |
