KATSUKAWA SHUNEI (c. 1762 - 1819) CHUSHINGURA, ACT 10: YURANOSUKE AND GIHEI.
Woodcut, signed 'Shunei ga', 'kiwame' seal, mark of the publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi. Very good impression and colour. Lightly soiled. In very good condition. 'Koban', 214 x 152 mm .
Shunei was the most original of the pupils of Katsukawa Shunsho. Although actor prints were his forte, he designed prints of every type: beauties, sumo wrestlers and warriors. He is considered to have influenced Sharaku, whose large portraits of actors (okubi-e) on mica ground are of about the same time as prints of similar type by Shunei.
