FRANCESCO ANTONIO SIMONINI (Parma 1686 - Florence ? after 1755 ?) CAVALRY SOLDIERS AND ARTILLERY-MEN
Pen and brown ink, grey wash, over black chalk, 347 x 623 mm. Watermark: Coat of Arms with letters. PROVENANCE: Ferruccio Asta (Lugt 116a). Simonini, a painter of battle scenes, studied with Brescianino and with Ilario Spolverini and was also influenced by the works of Bergognone. After a short stay in Florence, he settled in Venice, where he had the best of the English aristocracy among his clients. He was also the celebrated Marshal Schulenberg's official painter, and followed him on his military campaigns. |
