lente

ALEXANDER CLEMENS WETTERLING (Upland 1796 - Stockholm 1858) ROMAN BRIGANDS ROBBING A COACH
Black chalk, signed and dated 'Wetterling fece Roma 1829'; 220 x 287 mm.

Wetterling chose a military career in his early years, participating, when he was seventeen, in the battles at Großbeeren, Dennewitz and Leipzig. He became Captain in the Svea Artillery Regiment and Major in the Swedish Army. His interest in art also came early and focused on battle pictures and landscapes but he had no training as an artist until 1826 when he went abroad for his 'Grand Tour', spending five years in Paris and Rome. After returning to his homeland, Wetterling devoted most of his time to military service. In 1840 he became a member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Art.
