Painter, illustrator, engraver, architect, ceramist, master glassmaker, interior decorator, and fashion designer, Umberto Bottazzi was a complete artist. He briefly attended the Scuola del Nudo in Rome, but was essentially self-taught. Bottazzi began showcasing drawings at the Società Amatori e Cultori de Belle Arti and worked as an illustrator for prominent magazines like Emporium and Novissima. He designed ceramic plates for Richard Ginori and mosaics for funerary chapels. As a co-founder of the group "La Casa," he designed and built the villa of the same name for Rome's 1911 Unification anniversary competition. Collaborating with master craftsman Cesare Picchiarini, Bottazzi became a prominent figure in stained glass art, participating in major exhibitions including the Roman Secession exhibitions From 1914 to 1922, Bottazzi served as director of Rome's Antiquities and Fine Arts division. Later, he directed courses at the Scuola Professionale Margherita di Savoia, designing textiles and lace for his students to produce.Throughout the 1920s, he designed official posters, exhibited Shakespeare-inspired watercolors, and participated in the Fascist Fine Arts Syndicate exhibition. Up until his death in 1932, he continued painting and writing about Rome's urban history for the magazine Capitolium.
