Francesco Allegrini's father, Flaminio, also a painter, observing Francesco's talent, wanted him to study under the guidance of Cavalier d'Arpino. After Cavalier d'Arpino's death in 1640, Francesco continued his apprenticeship in Pietro da Cortona's workshop. In 1644, two key figures in his career in Rome and Gubbio became bishop and pope, respectively. On March 14, Monsignor Alessandro Sperelli, born in Assisi (1589-1672), was appointed bishop of Gubbio, and on September 15, Cardinal Giovan Battista Pamphilj of Gubbio was elected pope, taking the name Innocent X (1574-1655). Thanks to these connections, Francesco would obtain his most important commissions. He decorated the Chapel of the Sacrament in Gubbio Cathedral between 1652 and 1654, and over twenty years later, he directed the work on the church of the Madonna del Prato. On June 13, 1655, the painter became a member of the Accademia di San Luca and shortly thereafter received the commission to fresco seven rooms in the Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona. Between 1661 and approximately 1682, Allegrini was recognized as Gubbio's greatest painter. He decorated the church of the Madonna del Prato, as well as numerous canvases for the city's most important noble families. Francesco returned to Rome in 1682, where he died in 1684.
