Daniele Crespi was a prominent Italian painter and draughtsman of the Lombard Baroque. Despite his premature death due to the plague in 1630, he was one of the greatest exponents of seventeenth-century Lombardy. Crespi became known for his skillful use of chiaroscuro, dramatic compositions, and emotional depth in his works. He studied under prominent Milanese artists like Giovan Battista Crespi (Il Cerano) and Giulio Cesare Procaccini, developing a unique style influenced by Caravaggio's realism and the Carracci's color, with masterpieces like St. Charles Borromeo at Supper and frescoes at the Certosa di Garegnano. In addition to his religious works, Crespi painted portraits that reflect the character and status of his subjects, showcasing his keen observational skills. Despite his brief career, his contributions to the Baroque movement and to Lombard painting have earned him recognition as a significant figure in the history of Italian art.
