PIO JORIS
(Rome 1843 - 1921 )
ART COLLECTORS

Pen and black ink, on laid paper; signed P Joris, 172 x 130 mm. A few losses at the top.

A student of Achille Vertunni at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, Joris was soon influenced by Mariano Fortuny. Later, Joris worked in Florence, where he admired the paintings by Domenico Morelli, Filippo Palizzi and Saverio Altamura in the Exposition of 1861. These works pushed him to concentrate on studies from nature and genre subjects. During his lifetime he received international recognition and critical attention. He travelled and studied in Italy, Spain, France and England, exhibiting in Paris during the decade of the 1870's, as well in Italy.
